For senior adults who don’t like big, impersonal facilities, a board and care home may be an ideal solution. These communities consist of residential houses that have been designed and staffed for a small number of seniors to live together in a setting that resembles a family environment. Board and care homes are known by several different names, depending on their region. In some parts of the country, they are typically called group homes or residential care homes. In Florida, “board and care home” is familiar terminology.
What Does a Board and Care Home Offer?
Board and care homes are structured for older adults who need assistance with daily activities (ADLs) but do not yet need skilled nursing care. The level of care provided is akin to that offered in assisted living residences. Generally, all three meals and snacks are included in the monthly fee, and most communities provide cleaning and laundry services included in the price as well. Caregivers are always available to help with normal everyday activities like eating, toileting, and personal hygiene.
Licensing requirements are unique to every state, and in Florida, licensing is regulated by the Florida Board of Nursing Home Administrators. The Florida Board of Nursing Home Administrators was created to ensure that every individual engaged in elder care practice meets minimum requirements for safe practice. The organization is responsible for licensing, monitoring, disciplining and educating nursing home administrators to assure competency and safety to practice in the state.
How Are Board Care Homes Different?
Assisted living residences are more well-known than board and care homes, and there are three main differences. First, assisted living facilities accommodate a lot more residents – sometimes hundreds more. Secondly, assisted living communities are known for providing an active calendar of community events and activities. The third main difference is that meals in assisted living facilities are typically served in a dining room. By contrast, a board and care home is a senior living facility licensed to care for a few residents at a time, typically less than 20, in a more intimate setting. The residents do life and share meals more like a family than as a resident.
What Should Families Consider?
Board and care homes are an excellent solution for senior adults who are transitioning from independent living (or living alone) to long-term residential care. While identifying the options available in
